From the Oath of the Athenian City-State: We will ever strive for the IDEALS and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many; we will unceasingly seek to quicken the sense of public duty; we will revere and obey the city’s laws; we will transmit this city not only not less, but greater; better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us. Consistent with strengthening interfraternalsim and the values of service, charity, and patriotism, Alpha sigs extend the quality of life beyond campus boundaries though good citizenship. Citizenship is the process whereby an individual and the collaborative group become responsibly connected to the larger community and society to which they belong. In other words, to be a good citizen is to work for positive change on behalf of others. A citizen acknowledges the interdependence of all involved in, or affected by, these efforts. A good citizen recognized that the common purpose of the group must incorporate a sense of concern for the rights and welfare of all those who might be affected by the group’s efforts. Good citizenship, thus, recognizes that effective democracy not only involves the benefits of individual rights for everyone, but also the role of individual responsibility to gain and preserve those rights for others. 3. How do you prepare now for your responsibilities as a citizen? As a miniature democracy, Alpha Sigma Phi is a perfect place to learn how to work for the good of the group. Important resources in that regard include: faculty members, local community leaders, city managers, and alumni in public life. Good citizenship is essential for the success of the chapter. Extensive participation in campus activities and involvement of many members in leadership roles demonstrates the chapter’s strength and unity to the campus community. Contributions to life in the community, through philanthropic projects, active participation in local governments and volunteer work, all increase the respect of the surrounding community for college students in general and the Greek system and Alpha Sigma Phi in particular. This, in turn, also helps to fulfill our purpose of bettering the man. By working to improve your community, you are also working to improve and better yourself.
