Transformative Learning Spaces “What's next?" is all anyone needs to begin. "What's next?" has been a friend to you. What's next to do? From the musical “Big Fish” Composer & Lyricist Andrew Lippa Librettist John August
2
What the heck IS it?
3
Media Commons Support, training, and equipment for publications (paper and electronic) video and audio recording, editing & production Services are usually offered to faculty, staff and students, alike. For video production, some studios are “push button,” while others have full sound board and accompanying pro staff (UNI). Graphics workstations with big processing power and bigger displays (mostly Apple).
4
One-button studio at U. Iowa
5
Open to students and staff
6
Penn State turnkey design
9
Powerhouse graphics stations at UNI (Apple)
10
UNI Studio is staffed daily to produce for students and profs
11
UNI: Not quite so “one button”
12
Media Production Room at UNI (extremely configurable)
13
Maker Commons A place where students can explore curricular topics through the making of artifacts. Tools include 3D printers, Arduinos, "soft circuit" tools for wearable electronics, you name it. The idea is to unleash the creativity and tinkering UI, Coe don’t have. UNI new buildout in progress. Current EagleTech capabilities not shabby at all by comparison!
15
Digital Commons Taking the place of the open computer lab Wide variety of computer and monitor Include printing, scanning and copying functions All the ‘stuff’ that goes with paper (staplers, punches, LOTS of recycling bins) Lots of bring-your-own or checkout-ours laptop workstations more counters and islands than desks LOADS of electrical outlets
16
Bring your own device island
17
Dual monitor workstations
18
U. Iowa built in a lot of things but students move furniture
19
UNI arranges around room columns… less cord hazards
20
Computer lab/classroom without walls (Coe)
21
U. Iowa - similar to our kiosk computers
22
Coe: Elegant ‘bring-your-own’ island. Power in front apron.
23
Tools for working with (gasp) paper! (UNI)
24
Information Commons Books and resources “Ask a Librarian”!
25
“Traditional” side – you can order pizza, though
26
So… “Learning Commons” a.k.a. scholars' commons, information commons or digital commons Share space for Information technology Remote or online education Tutoring Collaboration Content creation Meetings Reading & study Sometimes class activities, especially those requiring distraction (presentations, mock trial, debate, etc.) are scheduled in these very public spaces.
27
Cafeteria at the Learning Commons at U. Iowa. No cash!
28
“Coffee Shop”/ Café at UNI
29
Coe’s space is gorgeous but it looks a lot like a library…
30
Soft seating at UNI
31
UI said big student wish: soft seating in “quiet” areas, too
32
Collaboration (aka “meeting”) room at U. Iowa
33
Collaboration rooms: some sound protection, no privacy
34
All surfaces are writable
35
Collaboration space tucked under a stairway at Coe
36
Collaboration… two students and a big screen on wheels at UNI
37
“Public” presentation space at Iowa
38
2-tier horseshoe w/ display at U. Iowa
39
Mock trial class just dismissed
40
Display & bench at Iowa (largely unused)
41
Online space reservation system at U. Iowa
42
So…. Kirkwood? Coe, Iowa, UNI… much more centralized population Maybe we could distribute some of these concepts? CLD group loved the collaborative spaces Do we lose the “cross-pollination” factor if we don’t force everyone into one space?
43
Cedar Hall
44
SOOOOO Many “So you want to create a Learning Commons” guides Loads of books and articles about the design process Experience of other institutions One college razed the library and created entirely new space U. Iowa, Coe, UNI re-worked part of the library Ideas seem to resonate with the Next Generation Learning Challenge (Gates Foundation) Component-based, reconfigurable, tailored to individual needs, no real idea what it actually means, etc.
45
Design Principles for Learning Spaces Long and Ehrmann (2005) Designed for people, not for ephemeral technologies Optimized for certain learning activities; not just stuffed with technology Enabling technologies brought into the space, rather than built into the space Allowing invisible technology and flexible use Emphasizing soft spaces Useful across the 24hr day Zoned for sound and activity
46
Other things learned… Flexibility, configurability are CRITICAL. Students move it to suit themselves (Iowa follows with buildout revisions!) Power trips you up (sometimes literally) Plan for the HEAT
47
Coe speaking center
48
Coe Writing Center
49
Showcasing student work So many displays sit dark Why not Project announcements? Showcase student work, video or static? “Content concerns” i.e. is it PG13? Need centralized control of displays
50
What if one used digital displays….? (UNI)
51
Imagine student work being showcased here! (Coe)
52
Events UNI “Around the World in 120 Minutes” U. Iowa Veterans group “Call of Duty” marathon
53
UNI Learning Commons: With bagpiper
54
Huge community event
55
This day, ethnic costumes in front of green screen to produce “passport” photos
56
