1 NSPIRG! Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group Mandate: Support work in social & environmental justice within an anti- oppressive framework. We link research to action and campus to community.

2 What we are Levy Funded society of Dalhousie University & King's College. Ratified at Dalhousie since ~1990 and at King's since 2012. Our current levy is $3 per semester. We had a successful levy increase two years ago – our first increase in over 20 years! Our finances are audited three times per year by the DSU.

3 What we are One of about 25 PIRGs across Canada that form a loose network of Social Justice Resource Centres across the country. We're the only one east of Montreal!

4 What we are PIRG is governed by a Board of Directors made up of Dal Students, King's Students, and Community members. We have two core staff, and we employ a range of part-time staff (often in student positions), such as: Library Coordinator Workshop Coordinators CURE Coordinator Student Summer Positions

5 What are we doing? This year we are: Giving out about $14,000 in about 50 grants to campus and community projects doing social & environmental justice work.  We are consistently known in the community as a place to seek support  We hold four funding rounds per year (next deadline is April 4, 2016)

6 What are we doing? This year we are: Booking out resources for groups to use: button makers, coffee urns, megaphones, projectors Running and expanding our library of books, movies, and zines Sending out a weekly newsletter of campus & community events Making specific efforts to promote our programs on Sexton, Carleton, and King's College campuses through tabling & postering

7 What are doing? This year we are: Funding three paid student research positions, doing research that supports campus organizing We run Rad Frosh every year: a program to provide an orientation to social & environmental justice communities in Halifax Hosting an Anti-Oppression Reading group on campus

8 What are we doing? Organizing the 2 nd Annual Underg(RAD) Journal: A journal of writing in social & environmental justice. Now open to community writing, too! Submission deadline: Feb. 26!!! (find last year's copy in PIRG!)

9 What are we doing? This year we are: Starting a program called CURE: Community- University Research Exchange. Helps students do work for credit that can be used by local community organizations PIRG has been involved in helping organize the Sexual Assault & Harassment Phone Line with the DSU Throughout the year we offer workshops and trainings that include: Beginner & Specific Anti-Oppression work, Meeting Facilitation, Campaign Strategy, Active Listening Cinema Politica Winter Film Fest Series: We're planning a series of film screenings this winter. Coming up soon, stay tuned!

10 Our Working Groups One way we support projects in an ongoing way is through working groups, that are organized around specific issues or purposes. Current working groups include: Divest Dalhousie (Dal's fossil fuel divestment campaign) Mirror Mirror (public education & art around mental health) Students Against Israeli Apartheid at Dalhousie Our Resilient Bodies Stop the Energy East Pipeline – Halifax
