Mini Lesson 2: Show and describe variability Make a Box Plot from a Dot Plot Data Literacy Project

Do cars tend to get more miles to the gallon in the city or on the highway ? 15 cars were examined for fuel efficiency in the city and on the highway. Data from www.fueleconomy.gov

Making a box plot from a dot plot: 1. Draw a line through the median (half way point of the data).

2. On both sides of your line, find the half-way point of those dots and draw another line.

3. Draw horizontal lines to connect the outermost lines, forming a box. This box contains the central 50% 0f the data and is called the interquartile range.

4. Draw a line from the left outer edge of the box to the lowest dot on the left (the minimum). Draw another line from the right outer edge of the box to the highest dot on right (the maximum). The difference between the minimum and the maximum dots is the full range of the data.

Use the median, range and interquartile range to answer the question: Do cars tend to get more miles to the gallon in the city or on the highway ?

Is the carapace length different between male and female crabs?

How tall are participating students in Queensland?

Does life expectancy tend to be longer for people in Asia than people in Africa?

How consistent are hourly readings from a solar panel?
