Emotional: process of learning to recognize and express one’s feelings and to establish one’s identity as a unique person. Social: process of learning to interact with others and to express oneself to others

Attachment Babies have a basic need for physical contact Attachment: contact that builds a bond between caregiver and child.

Research Harry Harlow: monkey experiment Monkey shaped forms out of wire and soft cloth. Used “substitute” mothers to raise baby monkeys. Babies clung to cloth monkeys. They needed physical closeness. Attachment requires more than physical contact. When grown they didn’t know how to relate to other monkeys. Lack of interaction.

Research 1900s: children found in government homes in Romania. Children had little care from adults Slower development in physical and emotional aspects Baylor University: abused and neglected children had 20 to 30 percent smaller than average brains.

Failure to Thrive Condition in which the baby does not grow properly Due to lack of love and attention Cries weaken, smiles fade, become withdrawn CAN be helped!! Love and support

Building Trust Through Care Trust happens if needs are met Sense of security when needs are met If needs aren’t met they learn world isn’t friendly. Inconsistency builds mistrust

Emotional Climate Are feeling contagious?? If someone snaps at you.. You will probably snap back. Babies catch tone of voice and senses feelings Conditions of the home influence how the baby develops.

How Behavior is Learned Any kind of attention is good for a child. Be careful about mixed signals… saying no but laughing Consistency is key.

Crying and Comforting Crying means needs attention and care! Comforting techniques: page 310 Self comforting: sucking thumb/pacifier, blanket/stuffed toy, twisting hair.

Stranger Anxiety 8 MONTHS Fear or unfamiliar people Baby that used to sit cheerfully now screams/crys when unfamiliar person approaches. Shows memory is improving! Not a good time to switch caregivers
