William Sidney Porter He was born September 11, 1862 in North Carolina. His only form of learning was received from his Aunt Lina. As a child he developed a love for reading. In his uncle's pharmacy, he became a licensed pharmacist in his teens.

Later in Life At age 20, he moved to Texas to work on a sheep ranch. In 1884, Porter first used his pen name, O. Henry, which was inspired by the call, "Oh, 'Henry'" the family cat.

His Family In 1887 he met Athol Estes, they eloped in July of that year. They had two children, a son who died shortly after he was born and a daughter Margaret.

An Unfortunate Turn Because of O. Henry’s money problems, he was imprisoned in 1889. In order to support his daughter Margaret, he wrote short stories while in jail and sold them.

In The End Porter died on June 5, 1910 in New York City at the age of forty seven from alcohol abuse. After he died an O. Henry Museum was made in his honor. The museum is in Austin, Texas, O. Henry’s hometown. The grave site where O. Henry is buried.
