THE CAMPAIGN

CAMPAIGN PURPOSE The Distracted Driving Campaign began in response to the tragic deaths of two of Sysco associates due to distracted driving. In response, Sysco Corporate Safety Services wanted to prevent anything like this from happening again, thus the push for education and awareness.

CREATING AWARENESS Sysco Interactive University (SIU) partnered with Sysco’s president & CEO Bill DeLaney and Corporate Safety Services to launch an awareness campaign addressing the dangers of unsafe driving. The team developed the online self-study module, “Understanding the Distracted Driver”, which focuses on the dangers of driving while distracted. The module consists of preventative measures and features video testimonials of those who have fallen victim to this growing risk known as “distracted driving.”

DISTRACTED DRIVING DEFINED Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in having the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving, increasing the risk of crashing.

CAMPAIGN SUPPORT Obtain Management support. Best practices show buy-in is more likely to occur when you support backing the cause. Designate a Champion to drive the initiative Hold a kick-off rally to show commitment: Invite a guest speaker from law enforcement or campaign advocate to drive the point home Serve light refreshments Lead by example

COMMUNICATION SUGGESTIONS Change location’s automated phone greeting to include safe driving message. “We at Sysco ____ are committed to eliminating distracted driving through education and awareness. Make the right choice and drive safely.” “Eliminate distractions and drive safely, the Sysco way.” Announce daily driving tip via public announcement system Distribute campaign messages via e-mail or by direct handout Display posters on easels in lobby and high traffic areas Hold “Lunch & Learn” session with a guest speaker Conduct a “Driver Safety Day” with Sprint (invite families)

TRIVIA CONTEST Conduct a weekly contest to test the knowledge of associates on the dangers of distracted driving. Methods suggested: – Distribute via e-mail – Conduct a raffle style contest – Hold face-to-face contest during meetings Winners notified via e-mail and/or with signage in common area

FRIENDLY COMPETITION Have associates break into small teams and have them commit to taking the online SIU course “Understanding the Distracted Driver.” Set a deadline for contest. Team who meets the criteria first, wins a prize Or All teams who meet criteria are entered into a prize drawing

Sprint partnered with Sysco Corporate Safety and Sysco Interactive University (SIU) to bring “Driver Safety Day” to Corporate, the Cypress campus (SBS) and Sysco Houston associates Group distributed educational materials, held prize drawings and online safe driving pledges were taken by associates Sprint presented smart phone applications to assist with eliminating distracted driving Guest appearance by Miss Sprint Cup and NASCAR prizes
