2 Do Now… The Lightning Thief – chp2… 1. What news does the headmaster of Yancy Academy send to Percy's mom? 2. Who's conversation does Percy overhear? What are they discussing? 3. How do Percy and Grover travel back to NYC?

3 U3-R4b: Character Inferences– chapter 2 LessonVocabulary Characterization Characterization Greek Myth Greek Myth Inference Inference Chapter 2 Chapter 2 Journey/quest Journey/quest challenges challenges Connection Today, we will continue to discuss the main character/narrator, Percy and we make strong inferences. We pay attention to the significant details that help us fill in the gaps by analyzing specific lines from the text. Remember that there are the surface details that the author directly states in the text and there are the underlying details that the reader must INFER understanding about the character based on actions and words. ONE great way to do this is to see how characters respond to challenges they face.

4 MINI-LESSON… Close Readers infer about characters in challenging situations & cite TBE to prove inferences. Close Readers infer about characters in challenging situations & cite TBE to prove inferences. RL.6.1; RL.6.3; W.6.4 RL.6.1; RL.6.3; W.6.4 DOK2; DOK3 DOK2; DOK3

5 Model… Watch how I make inferences about the main character/narrator, Percy...Read along with me as I do this work..."All the way into the city”...”Grover pulled me back to my seat.” Up to this point, we have learned primarily about Percy's difficulties in school, but notice here that the author shows another side to him..Up to this point, we have learned primarily about Percy's difficulties in school, but notice here that the author shows another side to him.. Page: pg. 3 Page: pg. 3 TBE: “Nancy Bobofit was throwing wads of sandwich that stuck in his curly brown hair.” TBE: “Nancy Bobofit was throwing wads of sandwich that stuck in his curly brown hair.” Challenge : Nancy Bobofit was harassing Grover on the bus. Challenge : Nancy Bobofit was harassing Grover on the bus. Response : Percy wants to defend Grover by standing up to Nancy Bobofit. Response : Percy wants to defend Grover by standing up to Nancy Bobofit. TBE: “ ‘That’s it.’ I started to get up, but Grover pulled me back to my seat.” TBE: “ ‘That’s it.’ I started to get up, but Grover pulled me back to my seat.” I can infer that …Percy is a very protective friend, and does not like to see people get bullied. 6 Active Work… Zoom-in and closely reread pages 16-18 looking for important details (the challenges Percy is facing and the ways in which he responds). Create a "Challenges and Response and Inference" Chart Page 17 Page 17 Challenge: Challenge: Response: Response: TBE: TBE: I can infer that.... I can infer that.... 7 CHOICE INDEPENDENT WORK… 1. Read chapter 3 "Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants" in the The Lightning Thief. What does this tell us about Percy as a person? How has the author, Rick Riordan, make choices in his writing to help us get to know Percy so far? Provide one specific example as evidence from the text. 2. Read chapter 3 "Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants" in the The Lightning Thief. Make strong inferences about Percy using the “Challenge-Response-Inference” Chart.
