16g/4ml = 4 g/ml The occupy the same volume. M = d x v = 10g/ml x 80 mL = 800 g

4. Given a large beaker of water at room temperature (20 C), draw the approximate position of the following objects when placed in that beaker of water and explain why you placed them as you did. (In each case draw a beaker of water and the object’s approximate position you are placing in it – you should have 5 drawings). styrofoam (D =.05 g/cm 3 ) ice (D =.92 g/cm 3 ) bone (D = 1.70 g/cm 3 ) balsa wood (D = 0.16 g/cm 3 ) gold (D = 19.32 g/cm 3 ) Styrofoam Balsa wood Ice Bone Gold

5. A graduated cylinder has 20 ml (cm 3 ) of water placed in it. An irregularly shaped rock is then dropped in the graduated cylinder and the volume of the rock and water in the cylinder now reads 30 ml (cm 3 ). The mass of the rock dropped into the graduated cylinder is 23 grams. Find the volume of the rock dropped into the graduated cylinder. Volume = Final Volume – Initial Volume = 10mL Find the density of the rock dropped into the graduated cylinder. Mass = 23 g Density = m/v = 23g/10mL = 2.3g/mL
5
Use the graph to determine MASS and VOLUME, then calculate DENSITY. Greater than 1 sinks Less than 1 floats
6
D = m/v = 24g /32mL = 0.75 g/ml WOOD COPPER M = d x v = 0.92g/mL x 100mL = 92 g V = m / d = 35 g / 8.8g/mL = 3.9 cm3

Notes: Atomic Theory (copy in your notes) 1) All matter is made of atoms. 2) All atoms of a given elements are identical in mass and properties. 3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms. 4) A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms.
