Characteristic Physical Properties
2
Characteristic physical properties are properties that are unique to a substance and can be used to identify it. For a human being: DNA Fingerprints
3
Density A characteristic physical property. How many particles (mass) are in a given space (volume). Where: m = mass of sample (g) V = volume of sample (cm 3 ) D = density (g/cm 3 )
4
Eg.1: Calculate the density of a metal sample that has a volume of 300 cm 3 and mass of 196.87 g. Eg.2: Calculate the density of an object with length = 2.5cm, width = 3cm and height = 5cm if it has a mass of 750g.
5
Other Characteristic Physical Properties Freezing Point: Temperature at which a substance turns from solid. Melting Point: Temperature at which a substance turns from a solid to a liquid. Boiling Point: Temperature at which a substance turns from gas to a liquid. All are unique to each substance.
