Finding Research Sources Objective: Students will be able to identify primary and secondary sources and know how to find them.

Primary Sources Primary sources are the original sources of information recorded at the time an event occurred or by someone who lived during that time. First-hand accounts of events Historical documents Image found at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lwjc.h tml

Primary Source Examples Diaries Personal Interviews Government Documents Autobiographies These sources will be especially helpful for your biographical sketch and for papers over late 20 th Century and 21 st Century authors Image taken from: http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/b ib/ourdocs/DeclarInd.html

Finding Primary Sources Search article databases and limit to primary sources or peer-reviewed Search Google Books

Finding Primary Sources To find primary documents on the web, try the following internet search topic + “primary source”

Let’s Try! I want an interview with the author of the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Search: “Interview” “The Invention of Hugo Cabret”

OR I want an interview transcript with the author of Hugo Cabret Search: “Interview transcript” “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” filetype:pdf *By adding the filetype at the end, I make sure I have a format that is easy to read and to print out, if I so choose. *Make sure you DO NOT use a space before pdf

Secondary Sources Secondary sources of information are derived from primary sources Summaries of primary sources Analyses or interpretations of primary sources Literary Criticism (the articles you will utilize in your papers)

Secondary Source Examples Dictionaries Encyclopedias Articles that review other sources Textbooks Biographies

Finding Secondary Sources Use article databases You won’t be able to access every database, BUT if you find an article you want to use, Miss Deras can try to get it for you (more on next slide) Search Google Books Google Books is a great way to find a printed source you might want to utilize for your project. EXAMPLE: I want a printed source of essays for The Red Badge of Courage. Search: site:books.google.com “essays” “The Red Badge of Courage”

Article Databases EXAMPLES OF DATABASES: JSTOR *EBSCOhost *Grey House Publishing G.O.L.D. Project Muse *Available through Public Library; others Miss Deras has access to

Searching for Articles Utilize Google Functions to make this easier EXAMPLE: I want a pdf article about time shown in William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury Search: “sound and the fury” “time” filetype:pdf

OR I want an article about the narrator in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn from the database Project Muse Search: site:muse.jhu.edu “narrator huckleberry finn” *Need the EXACT url title of the website or this will not work

Your Turn Go through the infographic on my website and utilize TWO search features in one search Focus upon your novel and try to locate a scholarly article AND/OR a primary source When done, call Miss Deras to your computer and she will check what you’ve found
