Warmup 1/8/16 Objective Tonight’s Homework
Look at the different textures on the rocks below. What kinds of tectonic, volcanic, or other processes do you think need to happen to get these different textures? Objective Tonight’s Homework To learn about the different basic kinds of rocks none

Introduction to Rocks So, rocks are pretty boring, right? Believe it or not, a knowledge of different kinds of rocks can actually be helpful in life. Let’s say you found rocks like this and really liked them. In fact, what if you liked them so much, you decided to tile your bathroom with them. Would these rocks be a good choice? Will they get too cold in winter? Will they crack from getting wet over and over? A basic knowledge of rocks will help you answer stuff like this!
3
Categorizing Rocks Below are pictures of 18 different kinds of rocks.
Your job for the next 15 minutes is to create and put these rocks in categories. Think scientifically about where the rocks may have come from. Mr. C. doesn’t want to see categories like “red”, or “pointy”. Come up with 3 or 4 categories. You may work with a partner on this.

Types of Rocks Rocks come in all different colors and textures. So how do we group them? Scientists group rocks by how they form.

Types of Rocks Rocks come in all different colors and textures. So how do we group them? Scientists group rocks by how they form. Igneous rocks form from volcanic processes. From magma and lava. Sedimentary rocks are formed from sand and grit that gets pressed together. Metamorphic rocks are igneous or sedimentary rocks that have changed from intense heat or pressure.
6
Types of Rocks Sometimes it can be hard to identify which category a rock goes into, though. For example, the 3 rocks below are from each of the different categories. But at a glance, they all just look like white rock!
7
Types of Rocks One of the main things we use to identify a rock is the rock’s grain. Grain is essentially how fine or rough the little pieces that make up a rock are.
8
Types of Rocks What do we use rocks for?
Igneous rocks are very hard and very durable. For this reason, a lot of ancient cultures used igneous rocks for statues and building materials. Today, we often also use it for gravestones.
9
Types of Rocks Sedimentary rocks are softer and usually closer to the surface than igneous ones. Like igneous rocks, they get used a lot for statues and architecture. However, we also use ground up sedimentary rock as the basis for cement.
10
Types of Rocks Like igneous and sedimentary, metamorphic marble is used for statues and decorations. Slate is often used as tiled flooring. Crushed quartzite is particularly strong and is often used for the base under railroad tracks and other things to keep them stable.

Exit Question Which kinds of rocks are made from hardened lava?
Sedimentary Igneous Metamorphic Compressional Phagic None of the above
