What is a hurricane? A hurricane is a huge storm! It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong winds spiraling inward and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph. Each hurricane usually lasts for over a week, moving 10-20 miles per hour over the open ocean. Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters.

Where and when did it happen? When-It happened August 23-August 31 2005. Where-It was in the eastern north America, Ontario, Georgia, and more.

Facts about what damage. 1. The highest winds was 174mph! 2. It was in category 5 hurricane. (SSHS) 3. It’s lowest air pressure 902 mb! 4. It’s total fatalities was 1,833. 5. One of the worst hurricanes.

More facts 6. Hurricane Katrina was the eleventh named storm and fifth hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. 7. It was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. 8. It lasted for 7 days.

When the storm made landfall, it had a Category 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale–it brought sustained winds of 100–140 miles per hour–and stretched some 400 miles across. 10.The storm itself did a great deal of damage, but its aftermath was catastrophic. Levee breaches led to massive flooding, and many people charged that the federal government was slow to meet the needs of the people affected by the storm.

One last fact 11. Hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were displaced from their homes, and experts estimate that Katrina caused more than $100 billion in damage.
