2. What is a Planetarium? A planetarium is a theatre built for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky.

3. The Projector in a Planetarium This machine is shaped like a large dumbbell, and is over ten feet long. It is supported by steel structures. The giant projector really comprises about 200 tiny projectors. Some of these projectors show only one important star; others show groups of less important stars.

4. The section between the two globes of the dumbbell contains the projectors for the Moon, the Earth, and the five planets visible to the naked eye. The complex machine shows the accurate path of the stars, and also their varying brightness. The planets, and some stars, are reproduced in their familiar colours.

5. The First Planetarium The first modern planetarium was built in 1923 for the Deutsches Museum at Munich, Germany. It was produced by the Zeiss Optical Company, who continued to manufacture planetariums after World War II.

6. The Worlds Largest Planetarium The Science Center of Nagoya Japan Planetarium has a diameter of 35 metres provide seating for about 400 people.
