1
Know This It will be applied to everything you do in this class. The Design Process Of Problem Solving
2
Clearly defined Problem or Challenge Conduct Research Generate Ideas for Potential Solutions Choose the best Solution Build a Proto Type or Model Test and Evaluate Solution Reflect and report on the process Any step can be revisited Steps in the Design Process
4
The Problem Clearly defined Problem or Challenge : Identified by your instructor or by you. PROBLEM: The handle of a pot becomes too hot to hold when the pot is heated
5
Conduct Research Important, all research must be relevant to your project and constantly refer to the problem you are trying to solve. Your research should address each of the following (or more): Suitable materials for your project. Wood, metal, plastic, ceramic. other (composite)materials
6
Conduct Research (con’t) The ergonomic factors that apply toergonomic your project. Shape form and function Safety factors related to your design Safety factors problem. In everyday use. Write letters to manufacturers / shops. Research using the library. Write letters
7
Conduct Research (con’t) Carry out a survey / questionnaire and present the results as a pictogram/table of results.survey / questionnaire J-Pain length of chain Collect pictures of existing products -photographs/catalogue pictures. Use the information to build on.existing products
8
Generate Ideas Collate your research and brainstorm solutions for the problem. Start to generate your design(s) based on your findings. Combine features you like out of several of the items you discovered through your research If you have a hard time with sketches start making scaled models
9
Choose the Best Solution From your design ideas choose the most suitable solution that best solves the clearly defined problem
10
Build a Proto Type or Model
11
Test and Evaluate Solution Subject your designs to real world testing. Hold it, let others try it, load it with weight (if required). Does it do what it’s supposed to do?
12
Reflect and Report on the Process Document: drawings, pictures videos, sketches should all be part of your package. Feedback from testing and user groups should all be recorded and evaluated. All of these documents are collected through out the project
