3. General Information Born in January 19, 1807 at “Stratford” in Westmoreland County, VA 5 th child Grew up where Washington was still a living memory Had many ties to Revolutionary War heroes

4. General Info. Cont’d 1829- Robert graduated 2 nd in his class w/o single demerit against his name June 30, 1831 he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis 7 children, all 3 sons served in Confederate army

5. His Health He suffered from heart disease This may have had something to do with the massive stroke he had on September 28, 1870

6. A leader in Progress… 1836- Became 1 st lieutenant 1838- Became captain; took part in the Mexican War Won distinction for bravery and conduct Received the brevets of major for Cerro Gordo, lieut.-colonel for Contreras- Churubusco and colonel for Chapultepec

7. Time Line 1852- Appointed superintendent of West Point; during his 3 years there he carried out many important changes in the academy. 1855- appointed as lieut.-colonel to the 2 nd cavalry

8. Time Line con’t 1859- suppressed the raid by John Brown on Harpers Ferry 1861- Sent to set up Atlantic Defenses 1862- Appointed advisor to Jeff Davis May 1862- Commander of the army of North VA Sept. 1862- Defeated the Union at Antietam

9. Time Line con’t Dec. 1862- Defeated the Union at Fredericksburg May 1863- Won at Chancellorsville July 1863- Defeated at Gettysburg April 9 th 1865- Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Oct. 12, 1870- Died; *died of heart disease

10. Opinion on Slavery Thought that blacks were better off here than in Africa Painful discipline is necessary for their further instruction as a race and will hopefully prepare them for better things

11. After The War After the war he was employed as an engineer worker in Washington and Baltimore. He became a president at a Washington College in Lexington, VA

12. Conclusion… Robert E. Lee was an important general that led the south thru good and bad times. Robert was a great leader and without him the south would have surely lost the war (anyway). With his help, the south had a chance.
