1 ESTIMATING MULTIPLYING Chapter 1 Lesson 1

2 1: ESTIMATION Ask: What am I being asked in this problem? 1.Look at the largest number. Estimate it to the nearest 10. 2.Keep the smallest number the same. 3.Multiply both numbers. 20 x 3 = Now, multiply 20 x 3. When you estimate, you get a very close answer to the exact answer.

3 2: GET YOUR PRODUCT If the big number is over 70, round it to 100. That’s the big number. Its important. When you get your product, that is your answer. Ask: How can I check my work in order to know that my answer is correct? What is the opposite of multiplication?

4 GOT IT?  In a car shop, Bill wants to buy 8 cars. Each car requires 2 bottles of liquid oil. About how many bottles of oil will bob need? Try these different problems and work them out, if you have any problems, ask a teacher for help.
