Holly Park Primary School SATs in Year Two

SATs Standards Attainment Tests Assesses attainment at the end of the Key Stages – End of Key Stage One – Year Two – End of Key Stage Two – Year Six National tests in all state schools This year SATs will be assessing the new National Curriculum This is the first year of the SATs in this new format.

Subjects Reading Writing Spelling Punctuation and Grammar Maths Science

Teacher Assessments and Tests

Teacher Assessments Teachers work with the children throughout the year. Collects evidence of what children can do. Judges what children can do. Assesses against Year Group Expectations Thinks about what the child needs to do next Plans further teaching and learning experiences.

National Expectations Not Yet Working at the Standard of the Tests Working Towards the Expected Level Working at the Expected Level (assumes that children meet every one of the critieria) Working at a Greater Depth

How do we know we are right? Year Group moderation (ongoing) Moderation with other schools (regularly) SATs tests should confirm what we know

Tests/Assessments Teachers are assessing children against National Expectations throughout the year. These will be shared with you at parent’s consultation. In May, children will sit the tests. During May, teachers will be deciding which ‘level’ they think your child is working at. This is called ‘Teacher Assessment’.

Tests Children need to do every test. – Reading Paper One – Reading Paper Two (harder) – Spelling – Grammar, Vocabulary and Punctuation – Maths – Arithmetic – Maths – Reasoning

Tests The test results will produce a ‘raw score’. In June the government will produce a conversion chart which will tell us which score is ‘expected’. Children who score below this will be ‘working towards’ the standard and children who score above will be ‘working at greater depth’.

Tests/Teacher Assessments If the result is different from our ongoing assessment, the teacher will look at the child’s work from across the year to see which level is correct. Teachers need to go with what they know about the child. Young child can underperform (some might even look like they have overperformed)

Reading In the form of a comprehension paper… Retrieval Questions: Read the text and pick out the words that give the answer. Inference Questions: Read the text and answer questions to show deeper understanding eg ‘The bear sighed.’ How was he feeling? Whole Text Questions: Questions about general book knowledge, eg ‘What is a diagram?’

Writing There is no writing test this year! Writing is assessed throughout the year and at the end of the year will be assessed against the ‘end of year expectations’.

Spelling, Vocabulary,Punctuation and Grammar Spelling Test Twenty words, given as a single word and in the context of a sentence. Grammar, Vocabulary and Punctuation Twenty questions from a wide range of knowledge eg statements, questions, apostrophes, nouns, adverbs etc

Maths Tests Arithmetic Purely ‘number sentences’ Reasoning Application of understanding by solving problems. Unfortunately the children are unable to use practical apparatus during the test… but all maths papers can be read by a teacher, to test maths not reading.

Science There are no tests for science. Teachers have been collecting evidence throughout the year and will use this evidence to make a Teacher Assessment using the criteria.

The Classroom Environment The classroom will be set out as normal. We will not refer to them as ‘tests’. The children will work with their teacher in small groups or 1:1. Other children in the class will be learning in independent activities as they would normally be doing. If the teacher thinks that a child needs a quiet space to minimise distraction, this will be arranged.

When will they be? Teacher Assessments have been taking place since your child started school! Tests take place in May

What will I be told about their results? In July you will get your child’s report containing the Teacher Assessment. You will be told your child’s level in Reading, Writing (inc Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation), Maths and Science. You will also be told how they did in the actual tests.

What You Need To Do Stay relaxed about it. Make sure your children are getting plenty of sleep and breakfast. If working out maths problems, encourage them to use practical apparatus or record their thinking and make sure they have understood the question. When reading, ask them questions about what they have read, especially questions such as ‘which word told you…?’ When your child is writing, encourage them to apply the rules they have been taught!

What we will do… Tell you their ‘level’ at the next parent’s consultation Teach your child the skills that they need to make progress to meet the expectations. Track their progress to ensure that they are reaching their potential. Speak to you if we have any concerns. Show them the sample tests so that they are not ‘strange’ on the day. Use our knowledge of them to give them the level that is right for them.

Examples of Sample Papers Although you may be tempted, please try not to do the sample papers with your child at home. We will do them at school and it will help us to assess what they know and how they approach the questions. This will inform our future planning. You can search for ‘2016 Key Stage One Sample Papers’ to have a look; they are on the.gov web site.
