CAN CAN250K and CAN125K – CAN250K is sometimes called the J1939 bus – CAN buses named for the bus speed – 250 kb/s or 125 kb/s
12
CAN CAN250K is used for: – The CD620 display to talk to the AccuGrade A4:M1 – The CB440/CD620/CD625 to talk to any 3D system – The CB440/CD620/CD625 to talk the other 2D Display if present CAN125K is used for: – All 2D sensors to talk to the CB440/CD620/CD625 display – The VM200 valve module on AccuGrade (CD625) and Trimble (CB440) aftermarket systems
13
CAN Debugging Paving System Things to check 60, 40, or 30 ohms ? Connectivity ? CAN250K or CAN125K ? Hi and Lo correct ? Voltage correct ?
14
Harness – Cat Factory Fit System CAN communications CAN250K – AccuGrade Display to A4:M1 – Blue CAN125K – AccuGrade Sensors – Red
15
Harness Consider CAN125K bus – Sensors Stretch it out A Terminator (120 Ohm resister) at each end of Bus – Acts like a reflector to contain the signal Up to 10 Drops, less than 3 m each TerminatorDropBus 2D Display
16
2D Harness
17
2D Harness – Left / Right Detection On the Left Side – Leave Open the 2 pin Deutsch connectors On the Right Side – Connect the 2 pin Deutsch connectors
18
3D Harness
19
Active CAN Terminators – 2D CAN125K Bus ONLY Allows the Averaging beam to be used without any physical change to the termination Averaging Beam cable connects ground to Active Terminator
20
Troubleshooting There is a great description in Chapter 8 of the Instalation manual
21
CAN125K Debugging – 60 Ohms – Maybe Resistance between pins C & D should be 60 ohms at the diagnostics connector on the main 2D harness – Cat Factory Fit does NOT have a diag connector Two Active terminators at each end of CAN bus – 120 ohms each Swap terminators with known good terminators if there is a problem – Or check Terminators are 120 ohms If CAN bus = 120 ohms:1 Terminator missing If CAN bus = 40 ohms:3 Terminators present If CAN bus = 30 ohms:4 Terminators present Check when Power is OFF
22
CAN125K Debugging – 60 Ohms – Maybe Tips – Averaging skis have passive terminators – Disconnect Averaging Ski before checking the CAN125K bus – Adding Averaging Skis will change the resistance + 1 Averaging Ski = 40 Ohms + 2 Averaging Skis = 30 Ohms When Power is turned ON, the Active Terminators will be turned OFF by the Averaging Ski – Then the System resistance will equal 60 Ohms
23
CAN250K Debugging - 60 Ohms Resistance between pins H & J should be 60 ohms at the diagnostics connector on the main 2D harness – AccuGrade Factory Fit does NOT have a diag connector Two terminators at each end of CAN bus – 120 ohms each Swap terminators with known good terminators if there is a problem – Or check Terminators are 120 ohms If CAN bus = 120 ohms:1 Terminator missing Check when Power is OFF – CAN250K only has 2 Passive Terminators – Should always be 60 Ohms
24
CAN250K Debugging - 60 Ohms Must have Loopback Connector OR 3D Harness connected before Left display can “see” Right display & vice-versa
25
CAN Debugging Hi and Lo Past faults have caused the pins to be swapped in the harness 120 ohm test will NOT find this! Need the continuity test Make sure you include the display connector!
26
CAN Debugging Voltage With the system powered on: Should be ~2 – 3 volts between Ground & either CAN line Check B (Ground) & either C or D (CAN125K lines) at the diagnostics connector on the main 2D harness Check B (Ground) & either H or J (CAN250K lines) at the diagnostics connector on the main 2D harness – AccuGrade Factory Fit does NOT have a diag connector 0 V indicates a short to ground – Look for a crushed or cut cable Machine V indicates a short to power – Look for a crushed or cut cable Try removing one device at a time until it is correct
27
Power 3 power circuits in the harness Protected Switched Power for all Sensors Turns on with the Machine key Protected by the VM200 On CAT factory fit systems a separate switching power supply is used Do NOT get power from an alternate source Other 2 are for 3D Protected Switched Power Used for all sensors Battery Power Used for 3D Display
28
Power Debugging Voltage correct ? Fuses OK ?
29
Quiz Name 3 sensors that use 7 pin connectors What power circuit is used for all sensors? What resistance should we see on the CAN bus? Should you measure resistance with the system on or off? What voltage should we see on the CAN bus? Should you measure voltage with the system on or off? Between which pins do you measure CAN voltage?
30
Quiz - Answers Name 3 sensors that use 7 pin connectors – ST200, AS200, CS200 What power circuit is used for all sensors? – PTRD SWPWR
31
Quiz - Answers What resistance should we see on the CAN bus? – 60 ohms, – or 40 or 30 ohms if you have Averaging Skis attached Should you measure resistance with the system on or off? – OFF! What voltage should we see on the CAN bus? – Should be ~2.5 V
32
Quiz - Answers Should you measure voltage with the system on or off? – On Between which pins do you measure CAN voltage? – On the main harness diagnostic connector: – Bin B (Ground) and C or D (CAN125K) H or J (CAN250K) AccuGrade Factory Fit does NOT have a diag connector
