The Sahara Desert is the second largest desert in the world. It is in North Africa and covers 11 different African countries.

veryThe Sahara Desert is very hot, it can reach temperatures of 50 C. On the hottest days in the summer on the Isle of Wight it is normally about 25 C. That is twice as hot!! But even though it is so hot the desert is not just sand. Some of it is rocks and there are small pools of water. These are called Oasis.

Some people live in the desert in small towns. They live in houses that are made out of mud. There is a danger that the strong winds in the desert will one day cover their houses with sand. NomadsHowever, lots of people who live in the desert are Nomads, and they live in tents, moving when they need to.

The desert is a very difficult place to survive in the wild but some animals manage to do it. They have adapted themselves to the environment by being able to do things like store water so they don’t need to drink daily. In the desert you may find: Camels Snakes Ostriches Scorpions Gazelle Lizards
