DEFINE. A feeling of loyalty for one’s own land and people; the belief that one’s nation is superior to another. Nationalism.

DEFINE. The policy of extending one country’s rule over many lands (through force or diplomatic means). Imperialism.

DEFINE. Sending officials and soldiers from the mother country to administer colonies directly. Direct Rule.

DEFINE. “A system of government of one nation by another in which the governed people retain certain administrative, legal, and other powers.” Indirect Rule.

Belgian involvement in Central Africa alarmed other European nations who wanted involvement in the possible wealth present in “un-civilized” parts of Africa. 2. The Boer War? Dutch settlers (Boers) fought against British advancement into Dutch settlements after the discovery of precious metals and diamonds. Britain eventually defeated the Boers and claimed the land.
