Slide Show #1 – Atoms “The Basic Units of Matter”

Matter Everything in the universe is matter or energy. Anything that has contains stuff and takes up space has matter. Mass and volume make up matter. Matter can come in different phases (solids, liquids, and gases)

Atoms – The basic building block of matter. Atom are UNIQUE for each element. Examples of elements are gold, oxygen, and helium An atom is the smallest particle of an element that has all the properties of that element

What does an atom look like?

Where is the nucleus located? The nucleus is located in the center of an atom. The nucleus “houses” the protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons together are “nucleons” because they are located in the nucleus. Most of the mass of an atom is in the nucleus!!

What are protons? A proton is positively-charged sub-atomic particle. (+ charge) Protons are located in the nucleus of an atom. Mass = 1.6727 X 10-24 grams Mass = 1 amu (atomic mass unit

What are neutrons? Neutrons are neutrally- charged (no charge) sub- atomic particle. The mass is the same as a proton. Neutrons are also located in the nucleus.

What are electrons? Electrons are negatively- charged sub-atomic particles. Very light! Mass = 9.110 X 10-28 grams Mass = 0.000549 amu They are located OUTSIDE of the nucleus on “shells”. (energy levels)

The Periodic Table

18 columns (families/groups) 7 rows (periods) 118 known elements 92 naturally occurring elements. 26 are synthetic (made in lab) Mostly made of metals Metals on the left of the zig-zag line Non-metals are to the right of the zig-zag line Semi-metals are on the zig-zag line.

Information on each element The atomic number = # of protons and also # of electrons. The symbol is the abbreviation of the element. The name of the element. The atomic mass = # of protons + # of neutrons
