Salvador Allende, Unidad Popular, a coalition of the Socialist Party and the Communist Party. The US knew that Allende’s victory would give Cuba an ally, thus changing the balance of power in the Americas Allende won with 36% of the vote in a democratic election A military plot to overthrow Allende was abandoned when the army commander-in- chief was killed when being abducted by the CIA and right wing groups

A short economic boom was followed by major financial problems New investments and foreign exchange grew scarce and there were many shortages President Nixon damaged the Chilean economy by blocking loans and other financial aid from multilateral organizations

Led by General Augusto Pinochet the Chilean Air Force bombed the presidential palace and Salvador Allende killed himself as the military stormed the palace Many Chileans thought the coup would lead to civil war, but instead there was a long period of brutal military dictatorship

Congress was dismissed and closed A “state of siege” was declared by the military so the press was censored, all political parties were prohibited, elections were suspended and a 9 pm curfew was mandated As a result of Pinochet’s National Security Doctrine, the judiciary, public offices and universities were purged of leftist supporters and replaced by the military

Thousands of perceived enemies of the state were imprisoned and thousands more were murdered The Chilean National Stadium was used as a prison camp and torture center 20,000 Chileans went in to exile and many people lived in fear of being raped, murdered or tortured Though some saw him as a positive force for Chile

Allende’s ambassador to the United States who was an economist and political figure As a refugee from Pinochet’s dictatorship, he accepted several academic position in Washington DC after fleeing Chile He was assassinated by Pinochet’s agents in 1976 after his car was bombed

Working by yourself or with one partner you will be acting as a a supporter of the Pinochet regime or human rights activist against him and will answer the following depending on your choice: 1)Why is the regime legitimate or illegitimate? 2)How has the junta as a government helped or hindered Chile? 3)What specific positive things has Pinochet done for the country or what specific harm has he caused? (YOUR RESPONSE SHOULD BE ONE PAGE)
