Salvador Allende Chilean doctor, leader of the Unidad Popular party Narrowly elected president of Chile in 1970 (wins 36% of the vote) Nationalizes Chile’s economy. Appoints Augusto Pinochet as top military general.

September 11 th, 1973 Pinochet and other right-wing generals are concerned by the radical changes Allende’s socialism party is making. Together with the CIA, leads a military coup to overthrow Allende in September 11 th, 1973. Allende killed, military dictatorship is set up.
