2
WHAT IS CHEMISTRY? The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
3
MATTER Matter is the STUFF that everything is made of. - anything that takes up space.
6
ATOMS Atoms are the building blocks of matter.
7
Nucleus is the center cluster. STRUCTURE OF AN ATOM Nucleus / - contains protons and neutrons Protons are positively charged particles. Neutrons are neutral Proton \ <- neutron - orbit the nucleus. Electrons -> - are negatively charged.
8
MOLECULES The smallest part of a substance that still has the properties of that substance. Atoms join together to form molecules.
9
Can not be divided into simpler substances. Hydrogen (H) Oxygen (O) Carbon (C) Nitrogen (N) Helium (H) Gold (Au) Iron (Fe)
10
Is two or more elements chemically combined.
12
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES - Properties of matter you can observe. EXAMPLE: Using your senses State of matter Size of the object Mass of the object Density Melting point Boiling point Magnetic properties
13
CHEMICAL PROPERITIES A characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. Example: –Burning
