What is NHS? The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Academic Scholarship 3.0 G.P.A. (equivalent to a 85% overall average)

Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities Exercises positive influence on peers Ability to delegate Demonstrates academic initiative Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility Holds any leadership position

Consistently exemplifies positive or desirable qualities of behavior Cooperative Takes criticism High standards of honesty, academic integrity, and reliability Respects others

Mentors in the community or school Volunteers Participates in an activity outside of school Works well with others Willing to take on difficult responsibilities

Students who don’t exhibit strong leadership, character, or service can still be selected on probation and they will have a designated amount of time to seek out opportunities to improve on those three requirements.

Maintain the standards by which you are selected Attend meetings Participate in both individual and chapter service projects during the year

Since 1946, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the parent organization of the National Honor Society, has awarded more than $10 million in NHS scholarships to outstanding NHS members. The program currently provides $250,000 annually in scholarship awards.
