2 Iceland - Unsustainable Rural Communities Objective: to understand why the migration of people from rural areas of Iceland to the urban areas of Reykjavik is causing serious concern, Key Words: unsustainable, out-migration, key workers, schools, clinics, suicide, alcoholism Isafjordur in the West Fjords region. List all the people who you think are most likely to leave rural Iceland to move to the cities..…… Key workers and professionals such as teachers, doctors and lawyers are more likely to leave for better job opportunities. Young adults in general (more women than men) also leave to look for better job opportunities.

Declining rural population Reduced demand for schools, shops, and other services Collapse of rural services Further rural depopulation Objective: to understand why the migration of people from rural areas of Iceland to the urban areas of Reykjavik is causing serious concern. 1.Create your own version of this negative multiplier 2.Now explain what the negative multiplier is and why this happens

4 THINKING TASK Why might more women migrate to Reykjavik than men? Men may feel that they need to stay behind to continue with the work on rural farms. Why might the men be experiencing high rates of alcoholism and suicide? They become isolated, having to work in very small communities with very little contact with the outside world, and this can lead to depression. Objective: to understand why the migration of people from rural areas of Iceland to the urban areas of Reykjavik is causing serious concern.
