ATOMIC NUMBER The number of protons in the nucleus Atoms are neutral so they also have this number of electrons. 1.3 MASS #, ATOMIC # & ISOTOPES MASS NUMBER Total number of protons AND neutrons C 13 6 Neutrons = Mass Number – Atomic Number

1.3 MASS #, ATOMIC # & ISOTOPES ISOTOPES Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. Different isotopes of the same element react chemically in the same way. Why? Different isotopes of the same element have different physical properties. E.g. they may or may not be radioactive, and they will certainly have different densities.

Carbon 14 half life is 5730 years Scientists work backwards to calculate how long it would take for carbon-14 levels to fall from amount in a living sample to the amount in the dead sample
