2  Definition-A terse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation.  It is a short phrase that expresses an opinion or statement of wisdom.  Example-Yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is todays dream. (khalil gibran)  Example- There are no gains without pains. – Benjamin Franklin

4  Definition- The process of deriving the strict logical consequences of assumed premises, logic.  Example-Lindsey’s toddler is in bed upstairs. She hears a bang and crying. Lindsey can infer that her toddler fell out of bed.  Norman sees cookie crumbs on the floor and chocolate around his sons mouth. Norman can infer that his son got into the cookie jar.

6  Definition- Any expressive use of language, as a metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia, Etc. in which words are used in other than their literal sense in order to suggest a picture or image or for other special effort.  Example- As fast as a cheetah: simile  The trees danced in the wind: Personification

8  Get into 4 groups of six.  Each group will pick a slip of paper from the box.  Each slip of paper has an example of one of the rhetorical devices on it.  Each group will decide which rhetorical device it is. The first group to guess what device it is gets a point, the group with the most points at the end wins.  There will be three rounds.
