Definition-A terse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation. It is a short phrase that expresses an opinion or statement of wisdom. Example-Yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is todays dream. (khalil gibran) Example- There are no gains without pains. – Benjamin Franklin

Definition- The process of deriving the strict logical consequences of assumed premises, logic. Example-Lindsey’s toddler is in bed upstairs. She hears a bang and crying. Lindsey can infer that her toddler fell out of bed. Norman sees cookie crumbs on the floor and chocolate around his sons mouth. Norman can infer that his son got into the cookie jar.

Definition- Any expressive use of language, as a metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia, Etc. in which words are used in other than their literal sense in order to suggest a picture or image or for other special effort. Example- As fast as a cheetah: simile The trees danced in the wind: Personification

Get into 4 groups of six. Each group will pick a slip of paper from the box. Each slip of paper has an example of one of the rhetorical devices on it. Each group will decide which rhetorical device it is. The first group to guess what device it is gets a point, the group with the most points at the end wins. There will be three rounds.
