Do Now! After yesterday’s activity, what big ideas do you expect to learn about in this chapter?
2
Agenda: 1. Do Now 2. Intro- Chapter 10 3. Notes- Biodiversity 4. HW: wkst
3
New Chapter: Biodiversity Section 1: What is biodiversity? Section 2: Biodiversity at Risk Section 3: The Future of Biodiversity Movie: The Cove
4
Biodiversity - the number of different species in a given area - The total number of species on Earth is still unknown, but has been estimated
5
Biodiversity: 3 levels - Species diversity**: the number of different species in an area - Ecosystem diversity: the variety of communities and habitats in ecosystems - Genetic diversity: the different genes within members of a population
6
Biodiversity: Benefits - Species are connected to ecosystems - Each species fills a specific niche - Food webs become fragile with fewer species - Keystone species: species that are especially critical to the function of an ecosystem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg62WKwA4 70
7
Biodiversity: Benefits - Population Survival - Genetic diversity increases the chance that a species will produce an adaptation that allows it to survive changes - Better protection against diseases http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH060xLvfkg
8
Biodiversity: Benefits - Medical, Industrial, Agricultural Uses - Many medicines come from plants - New plants & uses are constantly being discovered - Food: diverse crops are less likely to be wiped out by disease
9
Biodiversity: Benefits - Ethics, Aesthetics, Recreation - Is preserving species something that should be done simply because it is the right thing to do? - People benefit from spending time in nature: - Ecotourism: Tourism that supports the conservation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeynzQz4SX k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeynzQz4SX k
