Americans paid for the pedestal.
The pedestal was concrete and granite.
She was completed on October 28, 1886.

Liberty is across from Ellis Island.
Ellis Island is where immigrants landed.
Immigrants choose to leave their country.
Why? To escape war, famine, persecution.

In 1700’s, sailing took 15 weeks
In 1840, sailing took 15 days

10. Miss Liberty Welcomes the World
Immigrants cheered when they saw her.
They landed on Ellis Island.
Doctors made sure they were well.
Boats carried them on to America.

11. Liberty Gets A Bath In 1983, she needed fixing up.
Her metal skin had holes.
Her skeleton was bending.
Her head was leaning over.
Salt water and weather hurt her.
France and America raised money.

12. She looked great to be 100!

13. Visiting the Lady Millions of people visit each year.
An elevator and stairway lead up.
142 steps climb to her head!

14. What Does “Symbol” Mean?
An object that stands for something else.
The Statue of Liberty stands for freedom.
When people see the statue, they think about freedom.

Her torch lights the way.

She shows them the way.

They are still looking for liberty.
