2 The Statue of Liberty She stands for freedom. She welcomes the world.

Stands on New York’s Liberty Island Unveiled on October 28, 1886 Liberty Enlightening the World

4 A Gift from France Frenchmen made her. Bartholdi sculpted the statue.
Eiffel built her steel skeleton. To honor America’s 100th birthday ( ) 100 freedom years for France, too. The French people paid for her.

5 Liberty Crosses the Atlantic
She was built in France. She was shipped to America. Her parts were in 214 boxes. She arrived in 1884.

6 Liberty Rebuilt in America
She was rebuilt in America. She was placed on a pedestal. Americans paid for the pedestal. The pedestal was concrete and granite. She was completed on October 28, 1886.

7 About Miss Liberty… 305 feet tall Height of a 23-story building
Right arm stretches 42 feet Nose is 4 feet, 6 inches long Left hand holds a book “July 4, 1776”

8 The Queen of Ellis Island
Liberty is across from Ellis Island. Ellis Island is where immigrants landed. Immigrants choose to leave their country. Why? To escape war, famine, persecution.

9 Sailing to America Immigrants Wanted to live in America
Saved money for years Came by boat In 1700’s, sailing took 15 weeks In 1840, sailing took 15 days

10 Miss Liberty Welcomes the World
Immigrants cheered when they saw her. They landed on Ellis Island. Doctors made sure they were well. Boats carried them on to America.

11 Liberty Gets A Bath In 1983, she needed fixing up.
Her metal skin had holes. Her skeleton was bending. Her head was leaning over. Salt water and weather hurt her. France and America raised money.

12 She looked great to be 100!

13 Visiting the Lady Millions of people visit each year.
An elevator and stairway lead up. 142 steps climb to her head!

14 What Does “Symbol” Mean?
An object that stands for something else. The Statue of Liberty stands for freedom. When people see the statue, they think about freedom.

15 Her Symbols At her feet…a broken chain Her crown has 7 spikes.
7 oceans, 7 continents Her torch lights the way.

16 Immigrants Still Come Here
She shows them the way. “You are welcome here,” she says. They are still looking for liberty.
