2 Triangular Trade: Slave Trade  Slavery in Africa, and much of the world, at this time was the result of defeat not based on race  Caribbean and Southern planters wanted cheap labor to work on plantations but were reluctant to use indentured servants  turned to slavery  The Middle Passage  Voyage took 3-4 months  Slaves chained in rows on floors and shelves  Ships could hold more than 600 slaves  Slaves from different nations mixed together  Made it difficult to talk and/or plan rebellions  Slave Trade Video Slave Trade Video OBJECTIVE: SWBAT understand the political, religious, social, and economic institutions that evolved in the Triangular Trade by examining primary and secondary sources STANDARDS: H.1.d

4 Journal of a Slave Trader & Dialogue  Now that you have read the first hand account of Olaudah Equiano about the Middle Passage and John Newton’s opinion of the slave trade:  Pretend that Olaudah Equiano and John Newton met one another in London in 1789  Write a short dialogue of their meeting using the information you have learned through this lesson  What would they talk about?  What questions would they ask each other?  What would be those answers?  How would they feel about each other?
