Sold to British officer Travelled with him to Nova Scotia, London, and the Mediterranean 1763 – sold again Was allowed to work as a clerk and captain’s assistant Bought his own freedom in 1766

During his captivity, he learned English As a free man, devoted himself to the anti- slavery movement Lectured against British slaveholders From 1787 to 1788 drafted autobiography The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African 1 st published in London in 1789
