1 How Science Works

2 Top Gear Science L.O: To explain how The Stig uses How Science Works ideas to test cars and drivers.

3 Introducing…. The Stig

4 The Stig The Stig is well known to us from Top Gear He performs TESTS on a variety of cars You might say these are his EXPERIMENTS

5 The Power Lap Cars are races round a single lap of the Top Gear Test Track. The aim is for The Stig to get the car round the track in the fastest possible time. The cars are placed on the Top Gear Test Track leader board in time order for comparison against other cars. Current Leader: Ariel Atom V8 (1:15.1)

6 Top Gear Science We can think about How Science Works and how it is used by The Stig in his motor science What’s the independent variable in the power lap? What’s the dependent variable in the power lap? What are the control variables of the power lap? How could The Stig make the power lap a fairer test? How could The Stig make his power laps more reliable?

7 Independent Variable Dependent Variable Control Variables

8 In order to make the power lap a fairer test, The Stig might try to:
Control the weather Control road conditions Control his weight

9 How reliable are the Stig’s Results?
Explain to The Stig how he (or she!) could improve the reliability of the results in future.

10 The Reasonably Priced Car
The Current Reasonably Priced Car is the Kia Cee’d

11 Star In The Reasonably Priced Car
Current Leader: John Bishop (1:42.8)

12 Science In The Reasonably Priced Car
Dependent ? Independent ? Controls ? Fair Testing ? Reliability ? Precision ?

13 F1 Star In The Reasonably Priced Car
Why is there a different car used? Why a separate board for F1 drivers?
