There are seven basic quality tools that are remarkably being applied in the industry :  Cause-and-effect diagram  Check sheet  Control charts  Histogram  Pareto chart  Scatter diagram  Stratification

7 M ULTI -S TATE A DVANCED M ANUFACTURING C ONSORTIUM 20151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt320151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt3 found in Resources by the M-SAMC Multi-State Advanced Manufacturing Consortium www.msamc.org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.www.msamc.org Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License BASIC QUALITY CONTROL TOOLS 1.Cause-and-effect diagram (also called Ishikawa or fishbone chart): 1.Cause-and-effect diagram (also called Ishikawa or fishbone chart): Identifies many possible causes for an effect or problem and sorts ideas into useful categories. 2.Check sheet: 2.Check sheet: A structured, prepared form for collecting and analyzing data; a generic tool that can be adapted for a wide variety of purposes. 3.Control charts: 3.Control charts: Graphs used to study how a process changes over time. 4.Histogram: 4.Histogram: The most commonly used graph for showing frequency distributions, or how often each different value in a set of data occurs. 5.Pareto chart: 5.Pareto chart: Shows on a bar graph which factors are more significant. 6.Scatter diagram: 6.Scatter diagram: Graphs pairs of numerical data, one variable on each axis, to look for a relationship. 7.Stratification: 7.Stratification: A technique that separates data gathered from a variety of sources so that patterns can be seen (some lists replace “stratification” with “flowchart” or “run chart”).

Sometimes it's hard to know where to start

10 M ULTI -S TATE A DVANCED M ANUFACTURING C ONSORTIUM 20151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt320151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt3 found in Resources by the M-SAMC Multi-State Advanced Manufacturing Consortium www.msamc.org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.www.msamc.org Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License BASIC QUALITY CONTROL TOOLS: PARETO To take advantage of the power of the Pareto Principle, you need to take a few moments out of your busy day to take a snapshot of the problems you are having. Then you can start to gather information and analyze each problem.

11 M ULTI -S TATE A DVANCED M ANUFACTURING C ONSORTIUM 20151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt320151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt3 found in Resources by the M-SAMC Multi-State Advanced Manufacturing Consortium www.msamc.org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.www.msamc.org Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License BASIC QUALITY CONTROL TOOLS: PARETO Next you need to identify and categorize the problems you are having and establish how many times each problem occurs over a given period of time. There, that looks better already doesn't it?

12 M ULTI -S TATE A DVANCED M ANUFACTURING C ONSORTIUM 20151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt320151203_v001_msamc_courseware_quality_ppt3 found in Resources by the M-SAMC Multi-State Advanced Manufacturing Consortium www.msamc.org is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.www.msamc.org Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License BASIC QUALITY CONTROL TOOLS: PARETO Then using your count of each group, you can get an idea of how each problem stacks up against each other. Then put the largest groups to the left descending to the right. You now have a basic Pareto chart. One of the purposes of Pareto charts is to identify the most significant items which will show you where to focus your efforts.

In this example, we could spend a lot of time eliminating 3 of the 5 causes and only eliminate 20% of our problems as shown. That is a lot of work for such a minor improvement. It provides input to the establishment of measurable performance targets, as well as ideas for product design and process and work procedures. Product and process benchmarking should include the identification of world class or best-in-class based on customer and internal objective performance measures and research into how this performance was achieved.
