Illustrator Training Level I Training; Using Illustrator as a 2d visualization tool
2
Using Illustrator as a design tool ► Competency 4.01 Design Fundamentals ► Topics Design principles: balance, rhythm, proportion Design methods: emphasis, unity Design elements: line, shape, color, texture, space ► Illustrator interface ► Document setup, rulers, guides, viewing tools, right click options, and illustrator tools
3
Design principles; setup of the art board ► Document setup
4
Using the interface: Viewing tools ► To set up the art board, turn on the rulers and guides. From here the type of illustration produced will determine the use of different viewing tools.
5
Using the interface: using rulers and guides and right click ► The ruler will help with accurate placement of guides and objects that need to be positioned on the art board. The two methods of viewing the art board are: preview and outline
6
Using the interface: selecting fill and stroke ► Fill and strokes can be modified at any point in the design process, and either can be turned on or off as needed by picking the selection tool for the fill and stroke options.
7
Using the interface: recognizing tool groups ► The groups are: selection, vector tools, transformation tools, symbols and graphs, paint tools, page and object tools, and tool controllers ► Tip: to navigate through each group hold down the alt key Selection tools clockwise: direct selection, lasso, magic wand and selection Vector tools clockwise: type, shape, pencil, brush, line, and pen tool. Transformation tools clockwise: scale, free transform, warp, reflect Symbols and charts tools Paint tools clockwise: gradient, blend, live paint selection, live paint bucket, eye dropper, mesh tool Page and object tools clockwise: eraser, zoom, pan, crop

2D Drawing Techniques V104.05
9
The 2d tools
10
Using 2D tools: Drawing curves with the bezier tool ► Select the pen tool ► Draw the basic desired shape: determine if the shape is open or closed. ► Modify the shape by: adding points(+), deleting points(-), converting points (shift c) ► Use the direct selection tool to modify any individual point on the shape. ► To constrain the pen tool, hold down the shift key and place or drag to the position of the next point.
11
Using 2D tools: using layers ► Open a new or existing layout. ► Open the windows menu, select layers (f7). ► Draw a shape for the first layer. ► Make a new layer by picking the create new layer icon. ► Draw a new shape on the new layer. Continue drawing two more shapes on new layers. ► To move an object to a another layer, pick the object, then pick the select art indicator and drag the object to the desired layer.
12
► Draw 2 shapes (similar or different) and overlap them. Change the colors of each shape. Then select both shapes, then pick the pathfinder tool under the windows menu tab. ► With both shapes selected experiment with the shape mode features: to complete the compounded shape click on the expand button. ► Next experiment with the pathfinder tools following the same steps for the shape modes. Using 2D tools: using welding and grouping tools
13
Using 2D tools: using the contour tools ► From the menu bar select the appearance tab. ► Draw a shape that you want to add a contour of lines around its border. ► Choose the graphic style tab and select a style for the shape. ► Pick the appearance tab to modify the colors and line weight as well as fills. Experiment!
14
Using 2D tools: using grids and snaps ► Open the program and go to the menu drop down list and pick grids and snaps. ► Smart guides aid in exact alignment and orientation of objects on the art board.
15
Using 2D tools: Brushes and brush effects ► Under the window dropdown select the brushes palette. ► Pick the brush tool and draw a freehand shape on the art board. ► Pick the brush library menu tab to select presets. ► Right click on any brush to activate the brush options.
16
Using 2D tools: Fill and stroke (line thickness) ► Open the art board and at the top you will see the fill and stroke options. ► Draw a shape then change the fill and stroke colors. The line thickness can be changed for the stroke or outline of the shape. Fill and stroke line weight brushes graphic style
17
Using 2D tools: Rotation and tranformations ► Draw an object you want to rotate on the art board. ► Pick the object and select the transform tool. Notice the blue target-you can move it anywhere and rotate the object from that position. ► You can make duplicate shapes around a center point by picking the rotate tool and then alt click/left mouse to place it. Once you copy the shape in its rotation, continue duplicating around the center by using ctrl D. The angle chosen will determine the number of duplicates (360/?= angle).
18
► Draw several objects on the art board and assign each random colors. Be sure the shape overlap. ► Pick a shape using the layer palette. Then pick the transparency tool under the window drop down menu and begin changing the solid colors to lighter tints. Using 2D tools: Transparency
