Why Kansas and Nebraska?
Senator Stephen A. Douglas (Illinois) wants the transcontinental (cross country) railroad to pass through his state He introduced the “Kansas-Nebraska Act” in This Act: Added two new territories to the United States: Kansas and Nebraska Stated slavery would be determined by popular sovereignty in these two territories (assumed Nebraska would be free and Kansas would be slave) Repealed the Missouri Compromise

Effects of the Kansas-Nebraska Act
Transcontinental Railroad starts in Illinois Settlers from the North and South move to Kansas 1855: Elections are held in Kansas 1,500 legal voters Thousands of Missourians enter Kansas to push the votes to 6,000 Kansas legalizes slavery Furious, the Northern states stop enforcing the Fugitive Slave law

John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry
Brown planned a raid on a federal arsenal He wanted to distribute weapons to slaves Action failed. Brown and his men were mostly captured or killed within 36 hours Brown was ultimately hanged
