DO NOW When the bell rings, we’re going to be watching a clip from “Storm Chasers.” While you’re watching, think about what you already know about tornadoes. 1. Have you ever experienced a tornado? 2. Do you have family members who have? 3. What do you think about these guys? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06YyI7crOy0

Tornadoes Tornadoes form in unusually violent thunderstorms when there is sufficient (1) instability and (2) wind shear present in the lower atmosphere. Instability refers to unusually warm and humid conditions in the lower atmosphere, and possibly cooler than usual conditions in the upper atmosphere. Wind shear in this case refers to the wind direction changing, and the wind speed increasing, with height. IE: A southerly wind of 15 mph at the surface, changing to a southwesterly or westerly wind of 50 mph at 5,000 feet altitude.

Tornadoes Tornadoes are caused by warm, moist air in advance of eastward-moving cold fronts The intense spinning of a tornado is partly the result of the updrafts and downdrafts in the thunderstorm http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/translating- uncle-sam/stories/what-causes-tornadoes http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/translating- uncle-sam/stories/what-causes-tornadoes
