AIM: How does Earth get its energy? Do Now: 1.If the altitude of the noon sun is 23.5 0, which season is it? 2.What is the celestial sphere? 3.Where is the Zenith located? 4.The altitude of the summer sun rises just ___________ of east. 5.During winter, where do the suns direct rays strike?

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Everything you do and that is done in the universe involves energy.

Can we see all the light energy that radiates from the sun?  No.  The only light energy we see from the sun is visible light.  Visible light ranges in color from red to violet.  Ever heard of ROY G BIV?  Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet

What are the other forms of energy that come from the sun? All light energy that comes from the sun is called electromagnetic energy or light energy. They arrive in the form of transverse waves. Meaning the waves move from side to side.

How do we measure waves?  We measure waves from the top or crest of one wave to the top or crest of the next.  This is known as one wavelength.  The speed at which waves arrive are known as frequency.

Where do I find information about the Electromagnetic Spectrum? Look at page 14 of your ESRT.

What do we need to know about the Electromagnetic Spectrum?  You need to know that a decreasing wavelength means the waves are stronger, faster, and have a higher frequency.  Conversely, the increasing wavelengths are weaker, slower, and have a lower frequency.  Sample Questions:  Which wavelength has a lower frequency? X Rays or Infrared?  Infrared!  Which color has the strongest wavelength? Orange or Blue?  Blue!

Answer these questions……if you can!!!  Which kind of energy do we see from the sun? Ultraviolet or visible?  Visible  Electromagnetic energy arrives in the form of: ______________________  Transverse Waves  How do we measure waves?  From the top of one wave to the top of the next one.
