2
Where do plants get their mass?
3
An acre of pine trees (~120 trees) has the potential to take in roughly 5 tons of CO2 per year. How much is a ton?
4
Predict what may have happened….
5
Photosynthesis Equation How do we know where the mass comes from?
6
Designing an Experiment Agenda: – Review Problem – Review Hypothesis – Finish designing experiment summaries – Present to classmates
7
Autotrophic vs. Heterotrophic Autotrophs are “self-feeders” They can make their own food! Usually they use photosynthesis to make food Heterotrophs are “other feeders” These organisms cannot make their own food They must eat food made by others
8
Why is it important to study the ways organisms get energy?
9
Photosynthesis Carbon dioxide + water + light Glucose + oxygen
10
Where does photosynthesis occur in plants? It occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells
11
Plant Cell
13
Photosynthesis Summary Once sunlight is captured, its energy is trapped in the chemical bonds of sugars such as Glucose
14
Photosynthesis Light Dependent Reactions – Collect energy from the sun – Use it to make ATP Light Independent Reactions – Take ATP made in light dependent reactions and create glucose – Glucose can be used for energy for the plant
15
Checkpoint Why do plants have to make glucose using energy from the sun and humans do not?
16
Photosynthesis Equation With your elbow partner, describe where each input (reactants) that the plant needs come from Then, predict what each output (product) is used for.
17
Predict what would happen if plants did not have enough CO2. Predict what would happen if plants did not have enough sunlight.
18
Predict what would happen to humans if plants were unable to photosynthesis. What can we do to help protect our atmosphere?
19
Photosynthesis Recap Plants Need: Sunlight, Water, Carbon Dioxide – Where do they get it from? Plants Make: Glucose, Oxygen – What happens to those products? They do this through 2 steps – Light Independent: Uses sunlight to make ATP – Light Dependent: Uses ATP to make glucose
20
Photosynthesis Exit Ticket How do humans and plants interact in the environment? How does photosynthesis relate to us?
