Earth History Test -Observation and Inference Determine if a given statement is an observation or inference -Calcite, Limestone, Shale, Sandstone - Know how to identify a rock as limestone, shale, or sandstone using acid - Know which type of rock contains calcite and how calcite reacts to acid. -Differential erosion - Know how differential erosion effects the shape of remaining rock - Infer if specific rock layers are harder or softer than surrounding rocks based on the landform left by differential erosion -Sand -What happens to sand or rocks as they move from one place to another. Identify a specific sand as beach or river sand based on the sorting, particle size, and particle shape. Additional Vocabulary: - rock column, correlation, plateau, rock layers, rock samples, formation Earth History Study Notes: Test Friday 10/24

Observation: Getting information directly with your senses. Inference: A logical conclusion based on observation and past experience. Classify the following as observations or inferences: 1.There were two stamps on the envelope 2.The envelope was mailed on September 9, 1997 3.The person who sealed the envelope was a woman 4.The letter was opened with a letter opener 5.The ink on the address is black 6.An address is printed in the upper left-hand corner 7.The letter was mailed from the address in the upper left- hand corner O I I I I O O Earth History Study Notes: Test Friday 10/24

Calcite The material in the rock that reacted with the acid was calcite. Calcite is composed of Calcium Carbon and Oxygen.(CaCO 3 ) When acid reacts with calcite, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas is given off, hence fizzing. 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
4
Limestone Limestone is the name given to rocks containing calcite. If rock fizzes with acid, then it contains calcite and is most likely limestone! 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
5
Sandstone Sandstone: rocks that are made out of particles of sand, cemented together. What characteristics do these rocks have? 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
6
Shale Which rock # has not been mentioned? Shale is a smooth surface rock that has splintery layers. Acid sits on the rock with no reaction. Plant fossils 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
7
Naming the rocks Limestone Sandstone Shale You should be able to describe how you would identify a rock as limestone, sandstone, or shale. 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #22
8
Vocabulary Rock Layers: flat deposits of rock (like layers in a cake) that extend over a large area Correlate: to find a relationship or connection between. Rock correlations compare rock layers from 2 or more locations 10/3/08 Correlating RocksLesson #21
9
Rock column - the sequence of rocks Examples: You correlated two rock columns. Rock column chart on pg 33. Top named layer is the top exposed surface. 10/9/08 Differential Erosion Lesson #26
