Synthesis Equation Prior knowledge + Textual Information = New ideas New perspectives New opinions New insight … This is synthesis! *Synthesis is an ongoing process. As new knowledge is acquired, it is synthesized with prior knowledge to generate new ideas.

You Got This! Skills Needed For Synthesis The ability to: Summarize Paraphrase Compare & contrast Separate fact from opinion Draw inferences based on facts presented Evaluate information to form your own conclusions

Some Metaphoric Comparisons Synthesis = A Journey You begin with prior knowledge of a topic, gain new knowledge about that topic from a variety of sources, combine and analyze this information, and at your final destination, evaluate the information and form an opinion.

Synthesis = A Puzzle You collect the pieces of information from various sources and find connections to put together the entire picture.

Synthesis = Scaffolding Since newly acquired information should be synthesized with previously learned information, you should activate your prior knowledge of a topic which has been studied, researched, or discussed in class. Make connections between the new and prior knowledge.

Activity: (Pairs) Each pair will receive a few slips of paper with an event or situation detailed on it. With your partner, figure out where on the Pyramid of Hate the event/situation would fall. Come up to the board and tape it on in the appropriate place. Explain your answer in a class discussion.
