16
THEMES 16 Future Council Enabling collaboration between community, business and public sector and integration of activity Creating the evidence base for the correct and most beneficial investments Understanding what works, why it works and where else in Birmingham it will work
17
POTENTIAL ROADMAP AMBITION 17 “We will work with local people and businesses to design a small number of projects East Birmingham that change perceptions of the area, t he way people move around the area and the health and life chances of people that live there”
18
PHASE 1 PROJECT CONCEPTS 18 Delivery Projects Active Travel Zone Canal Revival Cycling in the Corridor Safe and Vibrant Neighbourhoods Enabling Projects Civic Tech and Social Innovation iCentrum and Serendip Instrumenting the Corridor, Modelling and Visualising Funded Project Baseline Cycling Revolution WMP Community Safety and Data Active Birmingham Canal and Rivers Trust iCentrum and Serendip
19
PROJECT CONCEPT OUTLINES 19 Canal Revival Understand what value a revitalised canal could bring and capture that to support the business case for physical improvements. Improve the safety of the area and citizens perceptions of safety through better marshalling of community action and presentation of data. Active Travel Zone Collect better data using existing and new sensors and wearables and integration of existing transport and citizen data. Complement with citizen and behavioural research and analyse data to develop new health and active travel products and services.
20
PROJECT CONCEPT OUTLINES 20 Cycling in the Corridor Develop an evidence base for doubling the current cycling revolution target to 20% in the East Birmingham Corridor by 2033. Use this to drive a cost-benefit analysis (social, economic and environmental) that would form the basis for a programme of behaviour, service and built environment changes. Safe and Vibrant Neighbourhoods Explore how data (CCTV, mobile, police and community generated) can be used to understand current perceptions of the area and co-design (with the community) ways of reducing crime either through pro-social interventions (living streets, pop ups, street food etc) or more targeted preventative action.
21
ROLE OF ENABLING PROJECTS 21 Civic Tech and Social Innovation Community supported to generate and act on innovative & entrepreneurial ideas that add value to the project concepts. iCentrum and Serendip Working with businesses and entrepreneurs to generate the commercialisable products and services that build on the project concepts. Instrumenting the Corridor, Modelling and Visualising Generating, analysing and modelling the data that enables the council, businesses and communities to understand the area and assist in designing, building and delivering innovative products and services.
22
IMPACT – EXAMPLE KPIS 22 Increase in cycling, running & walking along the canal Increase in happiness/wellbeing In East Birmingham Increase in community activity New businesses and new jobs created Reduction in crime, ASB and carbon emissions
23
IMPACT - HUMAN 23 “The community has organised to deal with the little things that make the place better to live. It’s so much easier to move around the area now, I can’t believe I used to be stuck in the car all the time. Because more people use the canal, it’s easier to play on it and more people are working in the small businesses that have sprung up along the route. Because we have learnt more about what’s going on in the corridor, it’s much easier to get involved.”
24
ROADMAP NEXT STEPS? 24 Build a baseline – data, projects and programmes Establish a core team – enthusiasm, budget holders, decision-makers & do-ers Integrate programmes and budgets and elevate ambition Understand the qu i ck wins Co-design Mission and communication
