Colonialism is a system in which a state (nation) claims sovereignty over territory and people outside its own boundaries, often to facilitate economic domination over their resources, labor, and markets.

God, Gold, and Glory Table Share In your table group discuss the different ways that the European desire for God, Gold and Glory would change Indian culture. Pick Your Hemisphere If you have a plant or animal that was only in the Western Hemisphere go to that side of the room, and do the opposite for the Eastern Hemisphere Old World Eastern Hemisphere New World (Western Hemisphere)

Make A Meal in 1491 Now within your hemisphere, find people to make a meal with. Use at least 3 foods per meal. Be prepared to explain your meal to the class.

Columbian Exchange The exchange of biological material from the Old World to the New World and the New World to the Old World during the colonization of the Americas

After Columbus Post 1492 Once Columbus made his journey to the new world, the biological material from both places mixed. Now find people with a mixture of Old World and New World foods and make meals that represent this mixing. At least three foods per meal. Be prepared to explain your meal to the class. Example: Hamburger (ow) bun (ow) tomato (nw) cheese (ow) fries (nw)

Mercantilism (Triangular Trade) Policy of European countries during the era of colonialism to gain wealth through trade and exploitation of colonies. The idea was that power came from wealth, so nations sought gold, silver, and favorable trade balances.
