Simple Functions 3 Main Parts of a function:function Input Relationship Output (http://mathinsight.org/exponential_function) (Click to Listen )

“The kind of action or activity proper to a person, thing, or institution, the purpose for which something designed or exists; role.” (http://dictionary.com) Function Whether a function has a name or not, it will always have an input, a relationship, and an output. Most common function name is “f” or “g”. (http://www.mathsisfun.com/sets/function.html) There are multiple different types of functions. Functions such as x 2 (squaring), x 3 +1, Sine, Cosine and Tangent functions used in trigonometry, and many more. The easiest way to solve a function is by making a table. (Click to Listen )

“A connection, association, or involvement.” (http://dictionary.com) Relationship Function problems may only give the input, relationship, or output only. The easiest functions given are the ones that only give the inputs, because then the rest the solver can make up any relationship they want (recommended to do first, because it is easier to find outputs) or output numbers (recommend doing after making up the relationship part of the function, because it is easier to solve). Most function problems found will most likely give the relationship only, which makes the solver having to figure out what numbers they want to use for the inputs and what the outputs are after plugging in the inputs into the relationship of the function. Inputs:Relationship: x 2 + 2 = Outputs: ?x 2 + 2 =? ? ? ? ? (http://library.thinkquest.org/18713/ns4/functions.chapter1.htm) ? (Click to Listen )

“Something that is put in.” (http://dictionary.com) Input (http://library.thinkquest. org/18713/ns4/functions.c hapter1.htm) In most cases inputs are easy to put into any function. The only exception is when the function problem only gives the output(s), because then the solver has to somewhat work the problem backwards in order to get the correct input(s) to put into a correct relationship (that the solver makes) to receive the output(s) that is already given. The cases where only the output(s) is given, it is a lot of guessing, plugging, and solving, repeatedly, until the solver gets the output(s) given. The number of inputs is either up to the function problem (if they are already given) or up to the solver. The number of inputs does not matter, as long as there is the same amount of outputs as inputs (recommend at least 3 inputs and outputs when solving function(s)). In order to get the out put number(s), solver must plug in the input number(s) into the relationship. Inputs:Relationship: x 2 + 2 - Outputs: 11(2)+2=? 22(2)+2=? 33(2) +2=? (Click to Listen )

“The act of turning out or production” (http://dictionary.com) Output To receive output(s), the solver must plug in input(s) into the relationship of the function. There must be the same amount of output(s) as input(s). Most difficult function problem is when the problem only gives the output(s) answers and not the input(s) or relationship. Difficult because then solver must work backwards to figure out the correct input(s) and the correct relationship. Inputs:Relationship: x 2 + 2= Outputs: 11(2)+2=4 22(2)+2=6 33(2)+2=8 (http://library.thinkquest.org/18713/ns4/functions.chapter1.htm) 4 6 8 (Click to Listen )
