Notebook # 8 Bellringer: 1.Mirrors are used in many different ways. Name five different technological applications for mirrors. 2.Which color shirt, black or white, would feel the coolest on a hot, sunny day? Why?
2
I. Reflection of Light A.Light Ray –a line in space that matches the direction of the flow of radiant energy. Blue = incoming light Red = reflected light
3
B. Rough surfaces –Results in diffuse reflection – an unclear image. Blue = incoming light Red = reflected light
4
C. Smooth surfaces –Smooth surfaces produce a sharp image by reflecting parallel light waves in only one direction. Blue = incoming light Red = reflected light
5
Angle of incidence (i) Angle of reflection (r) i = r 1.The law of reflection – Angle of incidence (i) is equal to the angle of reflection (r).
6
II. Mirrors A. Virtual Image –Image formed in a plane mirror. 1.Image appears to come from behind the mirror.
7
B. Real Image –An inverted image in front of the mirror. 1.Real images can be formed by a concave mirror.
8
III. Seeing Color A.Additive Primary Colors –Red, Green, Blue B. Subtractive Primary Colors –Yellow, Magenta, Cyan 1.Adding all three together produces white light. 1.Adding all three together produces black.
