2 In math, we love a good shortcut… If there are 20 students in a class and each student has $5, how much do the students have in total? 5 + 5 + 5 + … + 5=5·20=100 …multiplication is just a shortcut for repeated addition. If Alice eats 7 ounces of cake, how many times bigger will she grow? 2·2·2·2·2·2·22·2·2·2·2·2·2=2727 =128 times bigger …exponents are a shortcut for repeated multiplication.
