science 8 th grade

Atomic structure  Atoms are composed of subatomic particles protons (+), neutrons (+-), and electrons (-).  in the center of the atom is the nucleus, which holds the protons and neutrons.  The electrons are located outside of the nucleus energy levels (shells). The more electrons an atom has the higher the energy levels it has.  Atoms are neutral when the number of protons and electrons are the same.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =lP57gEWcisY&feature=player_det ailpage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =lP57gEWcisY&feature=player_det ailpage

ions are a loss or gain of electrons which will either make a positive or negative ion. to find an ion you need to know the atomic number of the element. This will give you the number of protons and electrons in the elements. Ex C (carbon) has an atomic number of six, it has six protons and six electrons. If you take away or add an electron it will have a negative charge or positive charge. Here’s a site for a periodic table http://www.ptable.com/ http://www.ptable.com/ IONS

isotopes  An isotope is the adding of a neutron in the nucleus.  Isotopes occur in the nucleus of the atom when the nucleus gains a neutron.  When it gains a neutron its atomic number stays the same but the mass of the element has increased because of the added neutron.  Some isotopes can become unstable and become radioactive as the atoms nucleus begins to decay.  http://www.ptable.com/ http://www.ptable.com/

What is the charge of a proton? Neutral Negative Positive

Electrons are negative and found in outside of the nucleus Try again

Adding N in the nucleus Adding electron to nucleus Adding a neutron in the nucleus

incorrect  N is Nitrogen on the periodic table  N is also too big for making an isotope  Think smaller then an element Try again

 Electrons cant go into the nucleus because of electromagnetism which was not covered by the power point  Think about what's in a atom Try again

incorrect O Neutrons have a neutral charge Try again

Great job Go back resource

CORRECT Go to question 2 Go back
