Unit 2 Exam will be on Wednesday December 2 nd 2015!!
2
What is it? Heat and pressure under ground turns the remains of dead plants and animals into coal, oil and natural gas. How do we use it? In order to get energy from fossil fuels, you need to burn them.
3
Pros: Inexpensive, most things we use run on fossil fuels Cons: Nonrenewable, it takes millions of years to make more, creates air pollution which can cause acid rain and breathing problems for people.
4
What is it? Energy that is trapped inside the nucleus of an atom of Uranium. How do we use it? Nuclear fission splits the nucleus of an atom and releases the energy. This produces heat, which causes steam to spin the turbines in a generator to create electricity.
5
Pros: Conserves fossil fuels, produces little air pollution, can supply power to a very large amount of homes. Cons: Nonrenewable, Waste is radioactive which is dangerous for living things.
6
What is it? Moving water that is trapped behind a dam. How do we use it? Transforming the potential energy of water trapped behind dams into kinetic energy that turns turbines in a generator to produce electricity.
7
Pros: Conserves fossil fuels, produces little to no air pollution, Renewable. Cons: Can kill animals that live in the water, disturbs fish from laying eggs and reproducing. Also can cause flooding if the dam is damaged.
8
What is it? Energy produced from Sunlight. How do we use it? Photovoltaic cells trap sunlight and convert it into electricity through the flow of electrons.
9
Pros: Little to no pollution, conserves fossil fuels, renewable and inexhaustible. Cons: Very expensive compared to fossil fuels, only about 20% efficient so you need a lot of solar panels, work best only in areas with very sunny climates.
10
What is it? Heat generated inside the earth from liquid rock called magma. How do we use it? Water is pumped through underground pipes, the heat causes water to turn into steam which turns turbines in a generator creating electricity.
11
Pros: Conserves fossil fuels, can be used to warm homes and buildings, renewable and inexhaustible. Cons: Can only be built in certain areas, expensive, pipes can break shutting down entire power plants.
12
What is it? Wind is creating by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface. This moving air has kinetic energy. How do we use it? Wind spins wind turbines (windmills) which creates electricity in a generator.
13
Pros: Conserves fossil fuels, produce almost no pollution, renewable. Cons: Large areas of land are needed, can produce a lot of noise, birds are injured or killed if they fly into the wind turbines.
