Applying the Design Process Unit 3 Objectives: Evaluate a product in relation to the goal of design and potential improvement. Design an improvement of a product.
2
Think… Think of a time when you saw or heard about a product, system, or process failing. What did you think about? Why do you think that product, process, or system failed?
3
Technology Can Fail Technology does sometimes fail. This usually occurs when the goal or criteria/constraints were not thought about enough during production of the technology. Has there been a time when your projects have failed because you did not think about the end outcome or the criteria and constraints? When?
4
Engineering Disasters Choose one disaster to focus on: Explosion Bridge Cranes Ferry Demolition What was the goal of the product, process, or system? Was the goal met? Why not? What could have been done to prevent this disaster?
5
TSA Event - Innovations Participants investigate and determine the need for an innovation of a device, system, or process, and then brainstorm ideas for a possible solution. 1.Working in groups of 2, brainstorm current products that you think could be innovated. Write your ideas in your EDJ. 2.Share your ideas with the class. 3.Narrow your ideas down to one product that you could improve. 4.Begin research on that product.
6
Product Research Research your product. Write down your findings and sources in your EDJ. Please include the following: Name of the product Current product innovations and the differences between the innovations Current product accessories (if applicable) Who uses the product How the product impacts society
7
Developing Possible Solutions 1.Brainstorm ways that you could improve your product. 2.Sketch out the possible solutions in your EDJ. 3.Scan your sketches to a flash drive for later use on a PowerPoint. Select the Best Possible Solution 1.Assess your possible improvements and choose the best solution. 2.Create working drawings of the solution. Drawings should be on graph paper, include annotations, and have lines that are steady (use drawing tools). 3.You must draw at least three views of the product improvement.
8
Creating a Model or Prototype Test and Evaluate Communicate the Solution Refine and Redesign Construct a model or prototype of your innovated product Test to see if your model or prototype will solve your original problem Create a PowerPoint to explain how you used the design process to create a solution to your original problem and describe the product Make improvements to your original design based off of problems you encounter as you build and test results
